A man charged with attempted murder after a woman was seriously burned has fronted a Melbourne court.

The 32-year-old woman from Werribee South, in Melbourne's west, was in the front yard of a home on Rivercoast Road when she was seriously burnt about 2am on Wednesday, police allege.

She was flown with life-threatening injuries to The Alfred hospital, where she remained in a critical condition on Thursday.

Michael Gauci, 43, from Werribee South, was subsequently charged with attempted murder along with intentionally and recklessly causing serious injury and conduct endangering life.

He fronted Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday and did not apply for bail.

Gauci was remanded in custody to next appear in court in March, 2023.

Lawyers noted it was his first time in custody and asked that he be able to see a doctor for unspecified health issues.

Police have until February to compile their evidence against Gauci.
