A man has been charged with stealing human remains and damaging graves at a cemetery in Melbourne's inner west.

Two mausoleums at Footscray General Cemetery were disturbed four days apart earlier this year, with partial human remains stolen both times.

Considerable damage was done to the gravesites.

At the time, police said it appeared they were deliberate and targeted crimes.

The 40-year-old man was arrested on Friday after police raided a home in nearby Spotswood.

Officers said partial human remains were discovered at the home.

"The man has been charged with six offences including two counts each of removal of body parts from the corpse of a human being, exhume or removal of human remains from place of interment and criminal damage," a Victoria Police spokesperson said on Friday night.

Theft can carry a penalty of up to 10 years in prison, while the removal of body parts carries a five-year penalty.

The cemetery borders the suburbs of West Footscray, Yarraville and Brooklyn.

There have been about 19,000 burials conducted at the site since it opened in the 1860s.

Police and security patrols were stepped up around the area in the wake of the crimes.

The police spokesperson said local detectives had been "working tirelessly and with extreme sensitivity".

The man will face the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on August 17.
