Man charged in connection with death of woman in Scots town following 'disturbance'

A 43-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of a woman in Argyll and Bute.

Mairi Doherty was found seriously injured within a block of flats following an alleged disturbance on John Street in Dunoon at 1.25am on Saturday, July 23.

Emergency services attended the scene and the 41-year-old was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for treatment. She passed away three days later on Tuesday, July 26.

Police have since launched a murder investigation into the woman's death and have confirmed that a man has now been charged in relation. He appeared at Greenock Sheriff Court today.

A 40-year-old has also been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged incident. She has already appeared in court also, according to officers.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Grainger, of Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team, previously said: “Our thoughts are very much with Mairi’s family.

"This is a very difficult time for them and I want to reassure them, and the wider community, that we are doing all we can to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

“There were a number of people in and around the block of flats at the time of this incident and I would urge anyone who has not spoken to officers to get in touch.

“If you saw anything then please contact us, as even a small piece of information could help with our enquiries. In addition, if you have private CCTV footage that could assist, please make us aware.”
