A man who was charged with intimidation and drug possession after he allegedly approached several children at Lake Macquarie this week has been ordered by a court to undergo a mental health assessment.
Police said Shane McGregor allegedly approached several children he did not know on Boronia Street at Cardiff at about 8am on Monday.
One of the children reported the incident to police, prompting an investigation.
Officers arrested the 45-year-old while he was sitting in a vehicle on Macquarie Drive at Eleebana on Wednesday.
Police said cannabis was allegedly found during a search of the vehicle.
Mr McGregor was arrested and taken to Belmont police station where he was charged with three counts of stalking/intimidation and one count of possessing a prohibited drug.
He faced Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, where he was ordered be detained in a mental health facility to be assessed.
According to court records, Mr McGregor will either be again brought before a magistrate or granted police bail if he is found to not to have a mental health disorder.
