A woman has been seriously injured and her male partner has been charged after an alleged domestic violence-related assault in Tennant Creek.
NT Police allege that at 12:30am on Sunday, the 30-year-old woman was assaulted with an "edged weapon" by her 35-year-old partner at a residential property on Haddock Street.
"The victim received serious injuries to her abdomen and was conveyed to Tennant Creek Hospital in a serious but stable condition," NT Police said in a statement.
"She is expected to require ongoing treatment."
Police declined to say what kind of edged weapon was used.
The woman's partner, who was arrested nearby after a foot chase, has been charged with a series of offences including unlawfully causing serious harm, aggravated assault and breach of a domestic violence order.
The man is being held on remand and is expected to appear in the Alice Springs Local Court on Tuesday.
In their statement, officers also praised the actions of a witness known to the pair who quickly alerted nearby police and helped them arrest the man.
Police said it was too early to determine whether alcohol was a factor in the alleged assault.
