A man allegedly involved in a shooting spree on the NSW mid-north coast has been charged with murder after a body was found in the area.

The alleged public shootings on Thursday prompted a large manhunt that ended with the arrests of Cory James Glass, 26 and another man, 32, at Kempsey.

Also on Thursday, the body of a man was found fatally shot just outside Port Macquarie.

Police said late on Friday they had charged the older man - who had been under police guard in hospital - with murder and six firearm offences.

The dead man had been identified as 30-year-old Sam Dieter Liszczak, police said.

"Police will allege in court the men had travelled together from Victoria in the ute, before the older man fatally shot the 30-year-old after a falling out," police said in a statement.

The alleged killer was refused bail and was due to face Kempsey Local Court on Saturday.

Earlier on Friday, Glass faced Kempsey Local Court charged with six firearm offences related to the alleged shooting spree.

He made no application for bail and it was formally refused, according to court documents.

Four incidents were reported early Thursday at various locations along the Pacific Highway in the Manning-Great Lakes and Kempsey regions.

A police vehicle attempting to stop the ute was fired at along Fernbank Creek Rd, while a motorist suffered a bullet graze at Coolongolook.

Police have said four vehicles were impacted in the shootings, which they do not believe were targeted.

A tactical team, multiple helicopters and the dog squad were used during the search for the alleged gunmen.
