A man has been charged after allegedly leading NSW police on a car chase through Wollongong then holding a person hostage during an hours-long siege.

The man was allegedly held against his will in a unit complex on Thursday after the 25-year-old armed man entered while trying to flee police.

Police say the gunman, 25, had been seen driving dangerously in a Wolllongong suburb before travelling on the wrong side of the road and ramming a police car in the CBD.

He then took his shortened firearm into the unit complex and refused to emerge.

Police surrounded the building, and the gunman surrendered about 3pm, about half an hour after allegedly releasing the hostage.

He is due to face court on Friday on nine charges, including being a never-licensed person driving a car, detaining a person and failing to stop in a police pursuit.
