A man left blind in one eye after having an egg thrown at him said he 'just wants to know why'.
Marc Toone, 33, says he is still suffering more than a year on from the incident which happened in January 2020 and has led to him suffering from permanent eyesight loss in his right eye, visual perception problems and panic attacks.
Following two operations on his eye in the days after the injury his treatment is still ongoing and he is now waiting to hear if he will lose his right eye permanently.
He has also undergone counselling sessions to help him deal with the impact it has had.
Thomas Connors, 18, of Mere Road, Lutterworth, Leics, was sentenced this week to a 12-month detention and training order after admitting his role in the egg throwing.
Speaking following the sentencing, Marc said: “No-one realises the further impact something like this can have.
"It’s the mental impact it has on you more than a year down the line and the effect it has on your family too.
"I have a lot of anger about what happened but I also just want to know why it happened.
"What made someone think that throwing an egg at someone was a good idea?”
A police officer has slammed the youths whose 'incredibly stupid and thoughtless' actions left the motorcyclist blind in one eye after one of them threw an egg at him from their moving car, Leicestershire Live reports.
Detective constable Jack Thomas spoke out after one of the teenagers, Thomas Connors, was jailed for his role in the events which changed biker Marc Toone's life forever.
Connors, 18, was driving the car as his accomplices - whom he has never identified - randomly threw eggs at other vehicles and a pedestrian as they drove around the Market Harborough and Wigston areas.
The attacks, on the evening of Friday, January 10, 2020, saw a number of passing cars targeted, causing some damage but no injuries.
However, the group's final target of the evening was Mr Toone as he rode home through Wigston.
Connors, of Bitteswell, near Lutterworth, appeared in court on Monday to plead guilty to a series of offences, including a charge of inflicting GBH relating to Mr Toone's injury.
He was sentenced to a year in custody and ordered to pay Mr Toone £500 compensation.
DC Thomas, who led the investigation, said: “Ultimately an incredibly stupid and thoughtless act has led to a man suffering a life-changing injury which continues to affect him and his family.
"A number of other people were also injured as a result of this act and vehicles damaged.
“Marc has been incredibly brave to share the personal impact which this incident has had on him both physically and mentally and to show the full consequences an incident such as this can have on the victims involved and the devastation it can cause.
“I hope this does help to make people think twice about their actions and the damage they can cause."
Following the hearing, Mr Toone told LeicestershireLive: "It has changed my life. I could have been killed that night, but I managed to keep my bike under control.
"I was howling in pain and I still have flashbacks now. When I sleep, if I do sleep, I wake up with scratches on my face where I have tried to take my helmet off in my nightmares."
Connors told the hearing at Leicester Magistrates' Court he was sorry for his actions.
However, the sentencing magistrate told him one of the aggravating features of the case was his decision to not reveal the names of those he was with that night, including the person who threw the missile which hit Mr Toone.
Connors also admitted playing a role in two offences which had taken place on Saturday, December 14, 2019, when he and two other youths stole eggs from the Co-op in Whetstone.
Shortly before 7pm, they threw eggs at a woman as she walked her dog in nearby Wychwood Road.
One of the youths shouted: "We hit the f * g b***h in the face," Tuesday's hearing was told.
Placing him in custody for 12 months under a detention and training order, magistrate Jennifer Joannou told him: “You showed no regard for any of the victims that night.
"The consequence of your actions is that a man has been left without sight in one eye. He says it has changed his life forever.
Connors was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.
