The alleged driver in a police pursuit where officers were shot at and military-style weapons seized remains in custody, as authorities continue to search for a passenger.
Faez Finau, 20, was charged with multiple driving and weapons offences after a police pursuit stemming from reports of an attempted home invasion in Sydney's southwest early on Tuesday morning.
Police were told two men fled in a Hyundai sedan after failing to gain entry to a home on Calaria Close at Edensor Park.
The car was spotted shortly afterwards in nearby Hinchinbrook, but a pursuit was terminated after an occupant of the vehicle allegedly fired shots at police.
Road spikes were used to stop the vehicle on St Andrews Road at Varroville, where Finau was arrested, while a passenger in the vehicle fled the scene.
The search continues for the man, who evaded a large-scale police operation in the area.
Police seized two pistols, an assault rifle and other weapons, as well as spent cartridges, and the vehicle.
Finau did not apply for release and bail was formally refused at Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday.
The case returns to court at Campbelltown on February 26.
He faces nine charges, including specially aggravated break and enter with intent armed with a dangerous weapon, possessing a loaded firearm in a public place, and possessing a military-style weapon without permit, as well as driving offences relating to the allegedly stolen Hyundai sedan and the police pursuit.
NSW Police released CCTV footage of a man exiting the Hyundai and trying to kick down the door of a home amid an appeal for further information relating to the incident.
Police also released images showing damage from the alleged shooting, with holes in the bonnet of a dog squad vehicle.
No officers were injured.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said the incident was a reminder of how dangerous policing can be.
"We are deeply, deeply in debt to our NSW Police Force," he told reporters on Wednesday.
"One of the police officers whose car was shot at was desperate to return to shift to work the following day."
