A man has been charged after allegedly stealing a car with a four-month-old baby in the back seat in Adelaide on Monday morning.

SA Police says a 37-year-old man from Para Hills was taken in to custody in the Adelaide CBD.

He was taken by police to the City Watch House in the back of a wagon on Monday evening.

Police interviewed the man overnight and later charged him with abduction and the illegal use of a motor vehicle.

He was refused police bail and is expected to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

SA Police said a Honda Jazz was stolen at about 7:45am from in front of a deli on Fourth Avenue in Klemzig.

The baby boy was inside the car at the time with the boy's mother, a 29-year-old woman, inside the deli at the time.

The car was found at Enfield two hours later.

The boy was reunited with his mother at the scene, with police saying he was "safe and well" after being assessed by paramedics.

Police said the mother was not to blame for her actions, describing the theft as "despicable".

A second man was arrested at the same home in the Adelaide CBD on a separate outstanding warrant.
