Man arrested over death of woman in Sligo released without charge

A man who was arrested as part of the investigation into the discovery of the body of a woman in Sligo has been released from custody.

In a statement released by Gardaí on Monday, it was confirmed that the man, aged in his 30s, was released on May 8, with a spokesperson adding that a file will now be prepared for the DPP.

The man, who was not named, was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of the murder of Angela Canavan who was found dead at her Sligo home on Monday, May 1.

The suspect was brought to a Garda station on Sunday night where he was quizzed by officers, however, he was released without charge.

Canavan, who is a mum of two aged in her 50s, was found dead at her home in St John’s Terrace on the bank holiday Monday, with emergency services being called to the scene shortly after 8:30pm.

Her remains were then removed to Sligo University Hospital for a post-mortem.

Although Gardaí had stated the results are not being disclosed for operational reasons the Irish Mirror established the postmortem was inconclusive, but Gardaí are satisfied the victim was assaulted.

Originally from Keenagh, Mayo but well-known in the Sligo area, Canavan was regularly seen walking with her Jack Russell Millie.

Her next-door neighbour Ann Byrne, told the Irish Mirror: "She was a very quiet lady. She was always walking her dog. I saw her yesterday morning.

"We heard nothing last evening until we saw the ambulance and the Garda cars.

"You’d never hear a sound from her. She used to give us sweets and we’d throw logs in over the wall to her. She was a perfect neighbour."

Investigations into the discovery of the body are ongoing and Gardaí have asked anyone with any information to contact Sligo Garda Station on 071 9157000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
