Man arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after gas pipe crash

A man has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after residents were evacuated from their homes following a crash in Salford.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the smash on Liverpool Road in the Cadishead area at around 2.30am this morning (Sunday). A car crashed into a house, which then caused damage to a nearby gas pipe, the fire service said.

Police said the car also collided with another vehicle. Some residents were evacuated from their homes by firefighters and police officers as a stretch of the road was cordoned off.

Cadent gas workers were also called to the scene. In an update issued this afternoon, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said a 33-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of driving whilst under the influence of alcohol.

He remains in custody to be quizzed by detectives. One local resident who lives in one of the houses on Liverpool Road with his partner and dogs said he was asleep when he heard a ‘crashing sound’.

He said the building 'started to shake'. He said he could 'smell gas' straight away before being evacuated until around 9am this morning.

In a statement, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 2:30am this morning (Sunday 11 December) GMP were called to reports of a road traffic collision between two cars on Liverpool Road, Cadishead. It is believed that one of the vehicles involved collided with a gas pump.
