A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman was attacked and left in a critical condition while walking her dog.
Anita Rose, 57, was walking Bruce, her springer spaniel, in Brantham, Suffolk, at about 5am on Wednesday when she was assaulted.
She suffered a serious head injury and was found lying in Rectory Lane by a member of the public at around 6.25am.
The passerby called an ambulance and Ms Rose was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge where she is continuing to receive treatment.
Suffolk Police said they arrested a 45-year-old man in Ipswich on Saturday on suspicion of attempted murder.
He is currently being questioned.
Detective superintendent Mike Brown is quoted in a press release where it is disclosed that it is not believed the man arrested knew Ms Rose.
DS Brown said: "We are still looking to establish the exact circumstances leading to this incident, but our initial inquiries are under way, and these will continue over the weekend.
"We continue to be extremely grateful for the support the community and the media have given us so far.
"This assistance we receive is absolutely key."
Brantham is a small village on the Essex border of only 2,500 and police are set to be completing patrols as well as door to door inquiries in the coming days.
DS Brown added that there will be forensic work and a search through CCTV footage.
