Man arrested in Derry after four sexual assaults reported in three hours

A man has been arrested on suspicion of committing a spate of sexual assaults over a short period of time in Northern Ireland.

The unnamed man, who is aged in his 50s, allegedly committed four sexual assaults in under three hours in Derry this week.

Three of these assaults reportedly took place in the Foyle Street area of Derry city on Monday in a period of just 30 minutes, between 5.30pm and 6pm. The fourth allegedly took place later on in the evening, between the Derry and Ballymoney area at around 8:15pm.

The man has since been arrested thanks to the "assistance" of the Translink staff, local police said, reports Belfast Live.

In a statement to Belfast Live, a police spokesperson said: "Police arrested a 53-year-old man on suspicion of four counts of sexual assault following incidents in Derry City and onboard a train between Londonderry and Ballymoney yesterday evening, Monday 3 April.

"Two women reported being approached and sexually assaulted at their place of work in Foyle Street at around 5.30pm. A third woman was then approached and assaulted also on Foyle Street at around 6pm.

"Another report described a similar suspect having approached and assaulted a woman onboard a train travelling between Derry/Londonderry and Ballymoney at around 8.15pm."

PSNI Inspector Armour added in a statement to the publication: "The suspect has been interviewed on suspicion of these offences and will return for further questioning at a future date.

"We are thankful to Translink staff whose assistance made it possible for police to co-ordinate resources and arrest the suspect at the train station."
