Man Arrested For DWI After Hitting Cyclists Near Dallas Airport

Passengers wait at the reopened terminal of Hamburg Airport following a security incident, in Hamburg

On Monday evening, a disturbing incident unfolded near Dallas Fort Worth International Airport involving a man driving under the influence who struck two cyclists, one of whom he ran over. The suspect, identified as Benjamin Peter Hylander, 31, was taken into custody by airport police.

The incident was captured on video by a witness, showing Hylander driving at a high speed in the right-hand lane before colliding with the cyclists. After the impact, Hylander briefly stopped, then proceeded to run over one of the cyclists before fleeing the scene in a white SUV.

Witnesses followed Hylander to a nearby gas station, where they obtained his license plate and convinced him to return to the crash site. Hylander reportedly apologized hysterically to the injured cyclist and exhibited signs of intoxication, including the smell of alcohol on his breath and bloodshot eyes.

Upon searching Hylander's vehicle, police found empty beer cans, both inside the car and in a grassy area near the gas station. Hylander initially claimed to have consumed only one beer before driving but later admitted to possibly drinking two or three large beers.

Following a sobriety test, Hylander, an American Airlines cargo employee, was arrested for driving while intoxicated and is facing two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges. The condition of the two cyclists involved in the incident remains unknown at this time.
