A man has been arrested for allegedly putting razor blades into pizza dough that was bought by customers from a supermarket in Portland.
The Saco Police Department arrested Nicholas Mitchell this week after the Saco Hannaford Supermarket reported a suspected incident of tampering with food items on October 6.
A customer allegedly found an undisclosed number of razor blades in Portland Pie pizza dough bought from the supermarket in Maine, police said.
The supermarket reviewed security surveillance footage from the store and allegedly saw a person tampering with the packaging of several Portland Pizza Pie Doughs.
Saco Police identified the suspect involved in the alleged tampering as Mitchell.
“Nicholas Mitchell is a former associate of 'It’ll be Pizza company' who manufactures product for Portland Pie,” said the Saco Police Department in a statement.
Police appealed for the public's help in tracking down Mitchell. They later arrested the 38-year-old in Dover, New Hampshire.
Saco Hannaford Supermarket has warned customers who bought Portland Pie pizza dough and Portland Pie cheese sold in the deli at any Hannaford store between August 1 and October 11 not to consume the products.
Customers can return the products to Hannaford stores for a full refund.
The supermarket told ABC News that the case remains under investigation and no injuries or illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall.
Hannaford added in a statement: “Hannaford Supermarkets has issued a recall for all Portland Pie cheese and Portland Pie fresh dough sold in the deli department.
"After what is believed to be further malicious tampering incidents involving metal objects inserted into Portland Pie products, Hannaford has removed all Portland Pie products from all store shelves and has paused replenishment of the products indefinitely.”
