Man arrested after travelling over 100 miles 'to hunt with offensive weapon'

A man was arrested after travelling from Wales to reportedly hunt with an "offensive weapon".

Officers from Merseyside Police were called to assist Lancashire Police with the arrest on Sunday, January 15. They found a man had travelled from Wales to the area reportedly to hunt hare.

Police said the man was equipped with an offensive weapon and was also arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty regarding a dog also being used for hunting. The dog and the vehicle used by the man were seized by the Lancashire Officers.

Officers also said the man was allegedly hunting illegally on land, following complaints from local farmers and gamekeepers.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Southport neighbourhood police officers have today assisted Lancs County South rural task force today [Sunday, January 15], in the arrest of a man who had travelled from Wales to Rural West Lancashire, equipped with an offensive weapon to hunt.

"The man was also arrested [on suspicion of] animal cruelty, regarding a dog being used for the hunting. The dog and the vehicle used by the man were seized by the Lancashire Officers.

"The wildlife officer based at Southport is in regular contact with colleagues in the Rural West Lancs task force and cross boarder operations such as this are a regular occurrence."
