Man arrested after police close Wallasey Tunnel for second time in day

A man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after the Wallasey Tunnel was closed for the second time in a day.

Merseyside Police attended the Kingsway Tunnel on the Vauxhall end yesterday, Sunday November 28 following reports for the safety of a man. Officers arrived at the scene at at around 2.30pm and closed the tunnel while they dealt with the incident.

Officers stopped traffic from St Anne Street in the city centre and a cordon was also put up around part of the tunnel. Merseytravel confirmed both the north and south bound slip roads on Scotland Road were closed and bus routes were diverted through the Birkenhead/Queensway Tunnel.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson confirmed today, Monday, November 28 that the force had arrested a man following the incident. The 41-year-old was arrested on suspicion of public nuisance and suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in police custody.

The closure was the second at Kingsway Tunnel yesterday. Earlier in the day at around 5am, police were called following the "unexplained" death of a man near the tunnel. The man reportedly fell from the bridge on Wheatland Lane, Wallasey.

Officers attended and performed CPR. An ambulance took the man to hospital where he was confirmed dead. Enquires remain ongoing.
