Man arrested after ‘eggs thrown at King and Queen Consort’ in York

A man has been detained by police after appearing to throw eggs at the King and Queen Consort during a walkabout at Micklegate Bar, in York.

The couple were on a visit to York Minster on Wednesday when the incident happened. The eggs did not hit Charles or Camilla.

The lone protester was seen shouting that Britain was “built on the blood of slavery” before he was bundled to the ground by about four police officers.

Afterwards onlookers erupted into a chorus of boos while shouting “shame on you” and “God save the King”.

Charles and Camilla were in York to attend the unveiling of a statue of Queen Elizabeth II, the first to be installed since her death.
