Man arrested after crossbow fired at person in the middle of the street

A man has shot a crossbow in the middle of a quiet street.

Armed police descended on a quiet residential street after reports that a man had shot a crossbow. Merseyside Police confirmed they were called to the Marsh Street and Celia Street area of Kirkdale at around 12.45pm on Friday, June 24.

A 54-year-old man was quickly detained by officers and arrested on suspicion of attempted section 18 wounding and affray. He has now been taken to custody and will be questioned by police.

Officers have seized the crossbow and it will now be forensically examined. Police have confirmed there were no injuries at the scene but neighbours are extremely shaken by the incident.

An investigation has been launched and CCTV, forensic and house-to-house enquiries are now underway. Road closures are now in place on Celia Street while enquiries are carried out and drivers are advised to avoid the area.

Inspector Martin Mannion said: “Thanks to the quick actions of our officers, the man was detained and his weapon recovered before any harm was caused to members of the public. Nonetheless, this would have been an extremely shocking incident for anyone to witness and our officers are currently carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances.

“If you were in the area at the time of the incident and saw anything then please let us know – all information you hold could be vital to our investigation. We will not tolerate those who use dangerous weapons to cause fear and harm in our communities, so please tell us what you know to keep our streets safer.”
