Man armed with broken glass tasered by police on Bristol street

A man who was armed with broken glass was tasered by officers after they had been alerted to an injured man behaving erratically in Southville yesterday. Police confirmed they received a call at around 2.50pm on Wednesday, adding that they apprehended the man on North Street after he had walked from Greenway Bush Lane.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said the decision was taken to use a Taser on the man in order to "detain him without further injury to himself or others."

After being transported to hospital, they confirmed that his injuries are not life-threatening, and the man had been detained under the Mental Health Act and remains for treatment to his injuries.READ MORE: Mum's 'nightmare' trying to find son a place to live in Bristol

They also confirmed that nobody else is believed to have been involved in the incident.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "Police were alerted to a concern for welfare after members of the public reported seeing an injured man behaving erratically on a Bristol street.

"The first call came in at about 2.50pm today, Wednesday 15 March and officers attended immediately.

"The man was initially seen on Greenway Bush Lane and walked to North Street, where he was detained by officers at about 3pm, so that he could be treated by ambulance crews.

"The man was armed with broken glass and officers used Taser in order to detain him without further injury to himself or others.

"He went to hospital by ambulance, where he was detained under the Mental Health Act and remains for treatment to his injuries, which are thankfully not life-threatening.

"No one else is sought in connection with the incident."
