A man was detained by police in York after he threw eggs - which all missed - at the King and the Queen Consort during a royal visit on Wednesday. King Charles and Camilla were being welcomed to the city by leaders when the incident happened.
The man threw three eggs at the royal couple before the pair were ushered away. He was heard shouting “this country was built on the blood of slaves” as he was being detained by around four police officers. Other people in the crowd began chanting “God save the King” and “shame on you” at the protestor.
Several police officers were seen restraining the suspect on the ground at Micklegate Bar, behind temporary fencing set up in the city for the King’s visit. When the protestor threw the eggs he also booed the King and Queen Consort.

As police were detaining the man, Charles continued with a traditional ceremony which sees the sovereign officially welcomed to the city of York by the Lord Mayor. It was last carried out by his mother, the Queen, in 2012.The King then appeared unfazed as he did a walkabout and greeted some of the crowds.
Charles and Camilla are visiting Yorkshire to carry out a number of engagements on Wednesday. They were in York to attend the unveiling of a statue of Queen Elizabeth II, the first to be installed since her death.
North Yorkshire Police have been contacted for a comment.
