Two people inside a car which drove into a flooded street in Liverpool have died, police have said.
Merseyside Police said a man and a woman were inside a Mercedes which drove into a flooded area in the Mossley Hill area of the city at around 9.20am on Saturday night.
Police were called to the scene on the city’s Queen’s Drive and, along with firefighters, found the bodies of a man and woman who were later pronounced dead in hospital.
The next of kin of the man and woman have been informed and formal identification has been made.
Detective Chief Inspector Mike Dalton said: “Our thoughts go out to the family of the man and woman who sadly lost their lives in this tragic incident, despite the best efforts of passing members of the public, our officers and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Services at the scene.
“We are at the early stages of an ongoing investigation on Queens Drive to establish the circumstances of this tragic incident.
“Road closures remain in the area as we continue with this investigation and motorists are advised to avoid the road.”
Officers have continued to appeal for witnesses to the incident, and for locals with any CCTV or dash cam footage to come forward.
