Police have charged a man and a woman with murder after a five-week-old boy was found unresponsive at a caravan park south of Brisbane with head injuries and rib and leg fractures.
Paramedics were called to the caravan park in Daisy Hill on the evening of June 14 last year.
The newborn baby boy was taken to Logan Hospital but he could not be revived.
Afterwards, detectives from the Logan Child Protection and Investigation Unit launched Operation Tango Triandra, with the assistance of the Child Trauma Task Force, Crime and Intelligence Command.
The matter was heard in Beenleigh Magistrates Court this morning, where prosecutor Stephen Cochrane said five-week-old Michael Willmot sustained significant head trauma, rib and leg fractures.
Mr Cochrane said the injuries were consistent with a shaking event that was allegedly carried out by 44-year-old Robert Alan Gee, who police said was known to the child.
He told the court the baby's 36-year-old mother Kristie Lee Willmot became aware of the incident and took no action.
They were arrested yesterday and have each been charged with one count of murder.
They were both remanded in custody and the matter was adjourned to March 1.
'Significant' injuries
Detective Inspector Mark White from the Logan District Child Protection and Investigation Unit told media it was alleged the baby boy suffered "significant" internal injuries.
Detective Inspector White said the nearly 18-month investigation has been "complex" and "challenging".
"One of the things that we were waiting on was some clarity around the medical examination of the child, that process can be quite lengthy," he said.
He said he could not reveal the pair's relationship to the child or whether they were known to police before the incident.
Police are now appealing to anyone with information regarding the death to come forward.
