A man was taken to hospital via a helicopter after suffering an injury 50 miles out to sea off the North East coast.

The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade was paged by HM Coastguard just after midnight (November 6) to say a helicopter would be landing in Richardson Road, Newcastle.

The man suffered a hand injury on a fishing vessel 50 miles off shore.

A spokesperson from the Life Brigade said a four-person strong team made sure the helicopter was able to land safely and redirected pedestrians for their safety.

He said: "Team members arrived on scene, cleared debris from the site and used their lights to mark out a safe space for the helicopter to land."

The Brigade spokesperson described the scene as the helicopter arrived before taking off again, at which point the man was taken in an ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for specialist treatment.

He added: "The helicopter landed, dropped off the casualty to a waiting ambulance and then took off again.

"The casualty was then taken the short journey to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for specialist treatment.

"The brigade was stood down at 01.46h."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 12:13am this morning from UK Rescue Agency to request an ambulance transfer for an injured male patient arriving in Newcastle by helicopter.

"We transported the patient from the helipad in Newcastle to Royal Victoria Infirmary."
