A judge in Doylestown, Pa., ruled that the man accused of beheading his father in their suburban Philadelphia home earlier this year is competent to stand trial. The ruling came after a lengthy proceeding where the defendant, Justin Mohn, appeared in court wearing a yellow jumpsuit and expressed willingness to work with a new attorney.
During the hearing, a forensic psychologist testified that Mohn appeared intelligent, calm, and socially appropriate. The psychologist noted that Mohn objected to using a mental health defense and displayed self-interest in his actions.
Another expert witness disagreed with the initial diagnosis of schizophrenia, instead suggesting delusional disorder. This witness pointed to Mohn's belief that he was a messiah-like figure and his interactions with the legal system, including seeking refuge in Russia.
Despite the disturbing nature of the case, a corrections officer described Mohn as extremely polite and respectful while in jail. Prosecutors detailed the gruesome events, alleging that Mohn shot his father before decapitating him with a kitchen knife and machete.
Mohn then recorded a video holding up his father's head and making inflammatory statements against the government. The video, which included conspiracy theories and political rants, was briefly posted on YouTube before being removed.
Justin Mohn faces charges of first-degree murder, abusing a corpse, and possession of instruments of crime. He is currently held without bail as the case moves forward.
