Man, 80s, dies after horror crash in Co Offaly as gardai close road

A man in his 80s has died following a two-vehicle collision in Co Offaly on Friday.

The crash between a car and a van happened on the N52 at Arden near Tullamore at around 1.30pm on Friday afternoon.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene and the pensioner, who was the sole occupant of a car, was taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital.

However, he was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

The driver of the van, a man in his late 30s who was also the sole occupant of the vehicle, was treated at the scene and did not need hospital treatment.

The road remains closed on Friday night as gardai carry out a technical examination and local diversions are in place.

Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact them.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí at Tullamore are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision in County Offaly on Friday, 21st January, 2022.

"Shortly after 1:30pm, Gardaí and emergency services attended at the scene of a collision involving a car and a van on the N52 at Arden near Tullamore.

"The driver and sole occupant of the car, a man in his 80s, was taken from the scene by Ambulance to Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore, where he was later pronounced dead.

"The driver and sole occupant of the van, a man in his late 30s, was treated at the scene and did not require hospital treatment.

"The road at the crash site is currently closed to allow for a technical examination to be undertaken by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Diversions are in place.

"Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and are also appealing to any road users with video footage from the location at the time of the collision to make it available to them.
