An 80-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his wife at their home in south-west London.

Alan Sharp, from Tolworth, is accused of killing 80-year-old Jenny Sharp at their house in Raeburn Avenue.

The Metropolitan police said they were called to the address at about 9.30am on Friday after a woman was found unresponsive. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Sharp spoke only to confirm his name, age and address during the hearing at Wimbledon magistrates court.

A postmortem examination on 20 July gave Jenny Sharp’s cause of death as “manual compression of the neck”, the Met said.

The Met said it was not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and the family was being supported by specialist officers.

Sharp will next appear for a bail application hearing on Tuesday at the Old Bailey.
