Man, 64, dies in flat fire after cooking was left unattended

A 64-year-old man has died following a flat fire in Toxteth.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service were called to Belvidere Road at around 8.25pm last night (December 23), with three fire engines arriving at the scene just three minutes later. On arrival, crews found a man in a ground floor flat of the three-storey property.

MFRS crews and North West Ambulance Service provided treatment to the man before taking him to hospital.

The 64-year-old was pronounced dead at hospital a short time later, his next of kin have been notified.

An investigation into the cause of the fire determined it started accidentally as a result of cooking left unattended. A MFRS spokesperson said: "Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service (MFRS) attended a serious flat fire on Belvidere Road, Liverpool L8, on Friday December 23. Sadly, we can confirm that the incident has resulted in the death of a 64-year-old man.

"Fire crews were alerted at 8.25pm and were on scene at 8.28pm with three fire engines attending.

"On arrival, crews found a casualty in a ground floor flat of the three-storey property. MFRS crews and North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) provided treatment to the person before they were conveyed to hospital. Sadly, they were pronounced dead a short time later. The man’s next of kin have been informed.

"An investigation into the cause of the fire has been carried out and determined it started accidentally as a result of cooking left unattended."

Merseyside Police confirmed that the fire is not being treated as suspicious.
