Northern Territory Police say a 63-year-old man has died after he was struck by a vehicle in Palmerston on Thursday night.

Police received reports of the incident along Temple Terrace about 10pm on Thursday.

First aid was administered, however the man died at the scene.

Police said the driver returned negative drug and alcohol tests and was assisting them with their inquiries.

Police also said the driver had done the right thing by stopping and remaining at the scene.

The Major Crash Unit is now investigating the incident.

St John Ambulance Northern Territory operations manager Craig Garraway said paramedics had received a call about the incident near the shopping centre on temple Terrace.

"Bystanders on that scene started CPR and paramedics continued that on their arrival but, unfortunately, the person involved in that wasn't able to be saved," he said.

NT Police watch commander Rob Overall urged people to remain careful on territory roads.

"Police would like to remind both drivers and pedestrians to be mindful of their surroundings and to be aware of other road users for their own and others' safety," he said.
