Man, 60s, dies following horror crash in Co Kerry as gardai close road

A man in his 60s has died following a road collision in Co Kerry.

The single-vehicle crash happened at Springfield in Ballyvelly, Tralee at around 4pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene and the man, who had been driving a motorcycle, was pronounced dead a short while later.

His body has been taken to University Hospital Kerry where a post mortem will take place.

Gardai have closed the road in order to facilitate a forensic exam of the scene.

They are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal single vehicle road traffic collision involving a motorcycle at Springfield, Ballyvelly, Tralee, shortly after 4pm this afternoon, Tuesday 17th May, 2022.

"The driver of the motorcycle, a man aged in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

"His body has since been removed to University Hospital Kerry where a post mortem will be arranged and the local Coroner has been notified.

"Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are examining the crash site and local diversions are currently in place.

"Gardaí in Tralee are appealing for witnesses to come forward and to those with camera footage (including dash-cam) to make it available to them.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Tralee Garda Station on 066-710 2300 023, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station."

It comes as another man in his 60s died following a road collision in Cork on Tuesday.

The incident occurred a few miles outside of the town of Skibbereen at Drishanebeg at around 1.30 pm.

The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers confirmed that his body has been removed to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem will take place.

There were no other injuries reported at the scene of the incident and Forensic Collision Investigators have since conducted a technical examination.

Gardai are now appealing to any person who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.
