Man, 48, arrested after being found with knife and hammer in Wigan

A 48-year-old man was arrested and charged by police after being found with a knife and hammer in Wigan town centre.

Warren Anderton, was arrested in Scholes for possession of an offensive weapon in a public place yesterday evening (March 26).

He has since been charged and will remain in custody until he appears in court on Monday morning.

Anderton was arrested as part of Operation Sycamore which is aimed at tackling knife crime in the region.

As part of the operation officers from GMP's Wigan division spent a day in the town carrying out weapon sweeps and speaking to residents.

Two further arrests were also made on Saturday as part of the operation.

The first, was a 19 year old male, who was arrested for possession with the intent to supply class a drugs, and possession of an offensive weapon.

The second, also a 19 year old male, who was arrested for being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs.

Both remain in custody while the investigations continue.

GMP Wigan West division said: "The operation has continued into the night.. Warren Anderton age 48yrs, was arrested earlier yesterday evening in Scholes by PC McCoombes for possession of an offensive weapon in a public place (a knife and a hammer).

"He has now been charged and remanded, and will remain in custody until he appears in court on Monday morning.

"Two further males have also been arrested in Wigan Town Centre. The first, a 19 year old male, was arrested for Possession with the Intent to Supply Class A drugs, and Possession of an Offensive weapon.

"The second, also a 19 year old male, was arrested for being Concerned in the Supply of Class A drugs. Both remain in custody while the investigations continue.."
