A man has been arrested and charged with possessing an imitation firearm with intent to commit an offence, and blackmail, in Maesteg. Officers were called to an incident in Bethania Street on Saturday, June 18.
Witnesses reported being woken by a police helicopter, and seeing both armed police and dog units in the area, with roadblocks also in place. The man charged has been named Geraint Hughes, 42, of Bethania Street.
Mr Hughes appeared before Cardiff Magistrates' Court today and has been remanded in custody.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "A 42 year-old man was charged with possessing an imitation firearm with intent to commit an offence, and blackmail, following an incident which occurred in Bethania Street at approximately 11pm on Saturday, 18 th June.
"Geraint Hughes, 42, of Bethania Street appeared before Cardiff Magistrates Court today where he was remanded in custody."
