Man, 40, arrested over stabbing of journalist outside home in south London

A third person has been arrested in connection with the stabbing of an Iranian journalist outside his south west London home.

Pouria Zeraati was wounded in the leg as he approached his car in Queensmere Road, Wimbledon, on March 29.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, which is leading the investigation into the assault, detained a 40-year-old man at an address in Cricklewood on Tuesday.

He is suspected of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm and was taken to a west London police station, before being released on bail to a date in April pending further enquiries.

Officers carried out searches at four premises in the Cricklewood and Finchley areas and enquiries continue.

Two Romanian nationals previously appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court accused of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and wounding following extradition from Romania on December 17, 2024.

Nandito Badea, 20 and George Stana, 24 are remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on January 17.

Mr Zeraati, who works for London-based dissident broadcaster Iran International, returned to work on April 5, a week after the attack, saying “the show must go on” on his the Last Word programme on.

The news channel aims to provide independent coverage of the country, but the Tehran regime has declared it a terrorist organisation.

After the attack, police said two suspects left the scene in a vehicle driven by a third male.

The blue Mazda 3 was abandoned shortly afterwards in the New Malden area.
