Man, 32, dies in hospital following stabbing in Cork city centre

The man who suffered stab wounds to the neck after being assaulted in Cork city centre has died in hospital.

Thirty-two-year-old Jason Butler was fatally injured after being assaulted with a broken bottle on Grand Parade shortly after 7.30pm on Wednesday.

He was rushed to Cork University Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and remained in critical condition until he passed away on Friday.

A man, aged in his 20s, is before the courts charged with assault causing harm. He appeared before Cork District Court on Friday.

The incident happened on Grand Parade in Cork city centre at around 7.30pm on Wednesday. Gardai rushed to the scene after a man was reportedly stabbed in the neck.

The scene was cordoned off and preserved for forensic investigations on Wednesday evening.

Investigating gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the assault, or anyone with camera or dashcam footage, to come forward.

In a statement following the incident, a spokesperson for Gardaí said: "Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this assault to come forward.

“Any road users and pedestrians who may have camera footage (including dash cam) and were in the area of Grand Parade/Daunt Square between 7:15pm and 8pm on Wednesday, June 14 are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Bridewell Garda station on 021 494 3330, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station."
