Man, 31, dies after van crashes into wall

A man has died after his van smashed into a wall in an early morning crash near Caerphilly. The incident happened in the village of Maesycwmmer at around 1.15am on Saturday morning.

Police were called and the road - Vale View - was shut for several hours as paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service were also in attendance. The 31-year-old driver of the van was taken to hospital in Cardiff, but later died as a result of his injuries. Gwent Police has confirmed that his name was Aled Angel and he was 31 years old. His next of kin are now receiving specialist support. Officers are appealing for any witnesses who might have seen the fatal collision to contact them.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "We’re appealing for information following a report of a road traffic collision in Vale View, Maesycwmmer, at around 1.15am on Saturday 1 October. Officers attended to assist with traffic management and the collision involved a white Renault Kangoo van which collided with a wall.

“Paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service also attended and a 31-year-old man from the Cefn Hengoed area, who was driving the van, was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff where he died from his injuries. He can be named as Aled Angel; his next of kin are aware and are receiving support from specialist officers.

“We’re asking anyone with information, including CCTV or dashcam footage from the Maesycwmmer area – particularly Main Road and Vale View – between 12am and 2am on Saturday, October 1, to contact us.
