Man, 29, arrested and elderly couple rushed to hospital after crash

A man in his 80s and woman in her 70s have been rushed to hospital after a "serious" crash on Sunday afternoon.

Merseyside Police were called to Green Lane around 2.30pm on February 5 following reports of a road traffic collision. The road was since closed in both directions after the crash between a Vauxhall Meriva and Mercedes.

The force has since confirmed that the driver and passenger in the Meriva, a man in his 80s and a woman in her 70s, have both been taken to hospital. The incident happened near the junction of Green Lane and Portelet Road.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving and causing serious injury by careless driving. Road closures are currently in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Images taken at the scene shows damage to the two cars as police are in the area. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service were also at the scene.

An update from Traffic monitoring network Inrix said: "Green Lane in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to serious accident around Guernsey Road."

Bus routes have also been impacted with diversions in place. Mersey Travel confirmed the Arriva 62 and 68 services will be subject to delays and diversion. There is currently no timescale for this delay.

Police confirmed an investigation into the collision is underway and CCTV and witness enquiries are being carried out in the local area. Anyone who can assist is asked to call 101 or DM @MerPolTraffic quoting log 577 of February 5.
