Man, 26, dies after being hit by falling tree

A man has died after being hit by a falling tree. The 26-year-old lost his life in a "devastating incident", police have said.

Officers were called to the scene at around 3:30pm yesterday (Thursday, October 6) to reports that a tree had fallen. They found two men had been hurt.

A man aged 26 was pronounced dead a short time later "despite the best attempts of those in attendance", a police spokesperson said. The other man had injuries that were not life-threatening.

A resident of Darley Street, where the tragedy happened in Sale, Greater Manchester, told the Manchester Evening News: "I didn't know what had gone on, I just heard a really loud noise earlier this afternoon - and not long after there were loads of police here closing off the road."

Another Darley Street resident added: "I heard someone had passed away. It is just so awful and sad to think this can happen so close to home, and my thoughts are with whoever's family is involved in all this."

Greater Manchester Police said: "The family are being supported by specially-trained officers during this difficult time. Detectives are now appealing for information, including witnesses and any doorbell footage, to help with the investigation to understand the full circumstances."

Detective Inspector Jennifer Reeve, of the force's Trafford division, continued: "This is a devastating incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends affected at this difficult time, especially of the man who sadly lost his life. I would also like to thank the public who tried to help at the time immediately after the incident happened, their actions were brave and appreciated by all the emergency services.

"We are continuing with our enquiries at this time to understand how the tree fell and are appealing for anyone in the local area to get in touch if they feel they have any information that may help."
