Man, 25, jailed for 14 years for punching baby and causing brain damage in Walsall

A man has been jailed for 14 years after he punched a baby in the head, leaving him with brain damage

Jordan Cattell, from Handsworth in the West Midlands, caused multiple skull fractures and haemorrhaging to the tot as he lay in his cot in Walsall.

He attacked the child in 2018 and was finally sentenced this month.

The ten-month-old baby will survive but the injuries were so severe that he is expected to need full time care for the rest of his life.

Cattell, 25, was found guilty after his story that the tot had fallen over was dismissed by a jury at Wolverhampton Crown Court

He was sentenced to 14 years behind bars at the same court on July 12.

West Midlands Police have published the conviction.

Detective Constable Lucy Simpson from our Public Protection Unit said: “This was an upsetting case, particularly as it has such a long-lasting effect on the victim, at the time a small, innocent baby.

“The sustained injuries have impacted the victim’s life, leading to lifelong disabilities.

“It has taken years of hard work to bring this case to court and I’m glad Cattell has been put behind bars for a significant period of time.”
