Man, 24, charged with attempted murder and GBH after two Met Police officers stabbed

A 24-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent following the stabbings of two police officers in Leicester Square on Friday, the Metropolitan Police said.

Mohammed Rahman has been charged with the stabbings and possession of a bladed article.

A female police officer was stabbed in the arm during the attack in Leicester Square, London.

She suffered a life-changing injury in a "frenzied" attack, according to Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley.

A male officer that was stabbed three times in the neck and once in the chest is expected to make a full recovery.

The officers had spotted an armed man close to the theatre district, who had to be tasered in order to bring him to the ground.

A Metropolitan Police statement said: "A man has been charged by detectives investigating the stabbing of two police officers in Westminster on the morning of Friday, September 16.

"Mohammed Rahman, 24, of Westbourne Park Road, W2, was charged on Saturday, September 17, with attempted murder and Section 18 GBH with intent.

"The attempted murder charge relates to a male police constable, the GBH to a female police constable.

"He was also charged with assault (ABH) and two counts of threatening a person in a public place with a bladed article. These charges relate to three other police constables.

"In addition, he was charged with robbery and possession of a bladed article.

"Rahman will appear in custody at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on Monday, September 19."

Video footage from the scene showed one officer being helped by his police colleagues, as they wrap a bandage around his bloodied arm.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley praised the officers' bravery in a statement shortly after the arrest.

He said: "There’s a violent struggle with a fairly frenzied individual – tasers deployed, PAVA spray is deployed and then an officer uses his baton – eventually the offender is subdued and arrested. The two officers were rushed to hospital.

"We remain concerned the injuries to the young woman officer’s arm may still be quite serious and may potentially be life-changing but that’s yet to be worked through.

"It’s a reminder to me that with all the calls for reform in the Metropolitan Police – which are absolutely necessary – we should never forget that we’ve got thousands of dedicated men and women going out every day who are prepared to be brave for Londoners."
