A 32-year-old man who suffered severe head injuries in an alleged altercation in the remote Northern Territory community of Wadeye on Saturday has died in hospital.
Northern Territory Police last night arrested and charged an 18-year-old man with serious harm over the incident.
But today, those charges were upgraded to manslaughter.
Police said another 24-year-old man "injured in the community on the same evening" was also airlifted to the Royal Darwin Hospital, with serious injuries.
A spokesman from NT Health said he remains in a stable condition.
Acting Superintendent Bradley Fox said additional police have been on the ground in a bid to quell the ongoing violence.
"Ongoing disputes between family groups in the community have seen additional police deployed, including crime detectives and general duties officers," he said.
Acting Superintendent Fox said after news of the death reached the community last night, "disturbances escalated".
Matthew Eastham, the chief executive officer at West Daly Regional Council, said the heightened community dissent was a serious concern.
"We remain very concerned about the situation in Wadeye and we are working with key stakeholders to look at options to improve the social disfunction," he said.
The 18-year-old has been remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Local Court today.
NT Police said officers and staff from the Department of Chief Minister and Cabinet were engaging with the community in an effort to restore calm.
