Man, 109, who still drives and feels 'perfect' reveals unusual diet tips for long life

A man who lives alone and still drives at the age of 109 has revealed his top tips for longevity.

Vincent Dransfield, who was born on March 28, 1914, has lived in his house in Little Falls, New Jersey, since 1945.

The centenarian does not need any help at home, as he can easily go from the main floor to his upstairs bedroom, as well as the basement where he does his laundry.

He also drives himself around the town every day to run errands, buy food and do his grocery shopping.

Mr Dransfield, who has one child, three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, says he feels "perfect" and believes he has been "very, very, very lucky" in his lifetime.

Granddaughter Erica Lista added he does not get back aches, headaches and other daily pains that she experiences daily at the age of 48.

During his life, Mr Dransfield has avoided getting any major illnesses such as cancer and heart disease.

His family recently gathered to celebrate his 109th birthday with pizza and carrot cake, his favourite.

After leaving school and starting working on a dairy farm at the age of 15, Mr Dransfield delivered milk for five years and drank as much of it as he wanted.

He told Today that he thinks milk gave him a healthy boost, especially during the Great Depression in the 1930s.

He said: "I was drinking milk and eating well because I worked on a farm. And I often go back and think they gave me a good start in life and for my bones in my body."

Nowadays, he drinks Ovaltine - a milk flavouring and nutrition supplement - and on his 100th birthday party, everybody drank it to celebrate.

Mr Dransfield spent more than 80 years serving as a member of the local volunteer fire department, becoming the chief for some time.

He said he met many friends while working there and added it kept him going throughout the years.

His main job was working as an auto parts manager before he retired in his late 70s when his wife of 54 years - who passed away in 1992 - told him it was time for him to quit.

He said keeping active was also a way for him to remain healthy and, despite not going to the gym or lifting weights, he kept moving while working in the fire department, waking up early most days.

His granddaughter said structured exercise amuses him as she explained: "He laughs at people who jog. He's like, 'Where are they running to?'"

Mr Dransfield's favourite food is Italian, as well as hamburgers, salad, milk chocolate and other sweets.

His granddaughter said he drinks a cup of coffee every day and occasionally some beer, even though he is not a big alcohol fan.

She said: "He has eaten whatever he wants. He has never watched his weight. He's never had to lose weight. He's always been fit."

Mr Dransfield smoked for 20 years after being offered a cigarette by a fellow firefighter, but then decided to give up.

His granddaughter said Mr Dransfield has a "positive upbeat attitude" and even when his wife passed away, he was "determined to keep on living" despite having "lived for her".

He said: "I keep positive. I never think any other way when something's wrong. I'm doing fine and I hope the good Lord keeps me that way."
