Another Mamma Mia! film is potentially on the cards, after the sequel’s writer hinted there could be a third instalment in the series.
The original film was released 14 years ago in 2008, with the sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, screened in 2018.
Ol Parker, the writer and director of the second film recently issued a statement about a third feature.
It comes after the producer of the first two Mamma Mia! films and stage show, Judy Craymer, discussed the potential of a third film being made, during an interview with the Daily Mail in 2020.
Despite the coronavirus pandemic just breaking out, Craymer said she was planning to think about the third film throughout lockdown, however struggled to concentrate due to the effects of the pandemic.
She said: "I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with Covid fog. I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see. I know Universal would like me to do it."
However, no official announcement about the proposed third film was made in the two years that followed. Yet it was during an interview with ScreenRant that Parker indicated the third film is definitely still on the producer’s mind for the future.
He said: "Judy Craymer, the genius producer behind the musical and the first two films, always plans for it to be a trilogy.
"That's all I can say. The first one made an enormous amount of money, and I think we made a fair amount too. I know that there is a hunger for a third, and I know that she has a plan. Wouldn't it be lovely?"
The second film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, showed fans the background of Donna’s story, taking viewers back in time to when she went travelling around Europe, where she met various love interests.
A present-day storyline that ran alongside revealed that Meryl Streep's character had passed away, with the hotel left in the hands of Sophie, Sky and their newborn baby.
