Malik Willis received positive review from Mike Vrabel after Week 15

With Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill reportedly facing an “uphill battle” to play in Week 16 after suffering another ankle injury, the Titans might have to deploy rookie Malik Willis under center.

Willis made two starts earlier in the season with Tannehill out, and while the rookie did show some flashes, it was quite clear an already limited passing attack was even worse off with the rookie as opposed to the veteran.

When Tannehill missed a series in Week 15, Willis got the nod, completing 3-of-4 passes for 20 yards, while also adding another eight on the ground.

The drive ultimately resulted in a punt, but Titans head coach Mike Vrabel believes Willis looked much more comfortable than he has all season long.

“I thought he was prepared, and went in there and was the most comfortable that he’s been,” Vrabel said on Monday.

“Malik has put a lot of work in in trying to play the game and command the huddle and do all the things we’ve talked about as far as how he needs to develop throughout the week when there aren’t a lot of reps.”

Speaking of facing an uphill battle, that’s exactly what Willis will have in Week 16, and that’s before mentioning his lack of experience in such a big spot, and the poor play-calling that has plagued this offense all season long.

The offensive line simply hasn’t been good in pass protection, even at full strength, but now the Titans might be without right guard Nate Davis and offensive lineman Dillon Radunz, who was an improvement over Dennis Daley in limited action on Sunday.

The status of wide receiver Treylon Burks is another one to keep an eye on for this offense. The rookie is easily Tennessee’s No. 1 option through the air, but his status remains uncertain after sitting out the last two weeks.
