Malik Tillman set Rangers 'battleground' challenge as World Cup legend says Ibrox can be stepping stone to Qatar

Jurgen Klinsmann has backed new Rangers star Malik Tillman to use his time at Ibrox to guarantee his place at the World Cup with the USA this year because he reckons Scottish football is a 'battleground.'

Rangers have snapped up the Bayern Munich starlet on a season-long loan with an option to buy and he's been tipped to be a big part of Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side this season. Tillman, 20, stunned Germany when he switched allegiances, having represented them up to Under 21s level, to the USA and made his international debut for the Americans last month against Morocco.

And former USA boss and Bayern legend Klinsmann is hoping he will shine at Rangers and book a spot at the World Cup against England, Wales and Iran. He said: "Rangers? That's a really big deal for Malik and if he has a string of games and his performances are consistent then he can learn very quickly and has a chance to grow which would benefit him enormously in terms of Qatar.

"So I think it's a pretty cool situation for him. You just hope that every extremely talented player like Tillman gets the chance to prove himself in the club environment.

"His move to Rangers is a big step because not only does he get playing time there straight away, but he also plays in a very strong league, especially physically. Scotland is a battleground and then he also has the opportunity to play in the European competitions."
