Male voice choir break into song inside Swansea Market

Swansea Market had special guests over the weekend with a performance by Dunvant Male Choir.

The choir staged a flashmob performance of Welsh hymn Cwm Rhondda, or as it is commonly known, bread of heaven, just moments before Wales' Six Nations match with England.

Performing annually across the city, the group have become viral sensations with videos of the choir's performances over south Wales, also appearing in Mumbles promenade several years ago.

Dunvant Male Choir are the oldest continuous serving choir in Wales, approaching its 127-year tenure.

Musical Director Jonathan Rogers said: "We were invited by Swansea Council as they were launching their new Market garden, they wanted musical performances and they knew we've done it in the past in places like the Quadrant and the Mumbles.

"We usually do flash mobs to aid our recruitment, they get a lot of traffic on social media and it's the first one we've done since the pandemic and the easing of restrictions.

"It was very busy during the day and it was the perfect time for it, it was a happy coincidence - people were in a very patriotic mood with the game the same day, we even had a discount at the Cockles stand within the Market."

The male choir had been stifled for several years surrounding ongoing restrictions which prevented them from not only performing, but making surprise flash mobs across the city.

These issues meant the choir had to undergo most of their rehearsals via a Zoom meeting which presented its own unique challenges as a lot of their members adjusted to using technology.

"Some of our members aren't computer literate and it presented a real challenge creating an online format so we could continue what we were doing.

"This means a lot to a lot of our members, it's a way they interact with each other or have a social interaction, now that we have that engagement with people again - it's nice to have that back," the 39-year-old said.

The latest flash mob event has already had thousands of views from people all over the World.

It comes as Dunvant Male Voice Choir builds interest in an upcoming concert at the Brangwyn Hall starring Sir Bryn Terfel, an anniversary concert to mark their 125 years of operation - an event delayed by two years due to the pandemic.

The event runs on April 2, and you can still purchase tickets by clicking here.
