It is moving that Malcolm X’s visit to Birmingham should be celebrated 60 years later by a mural in Smethwick, where he spoke on the morning of 12 February 1965 (Report, 12 February). At 2pm that afternoon he also spoke at Birmingham University students’ union. Those of us who were there were distressed to read that he had died on the 21st. In the Guardian on the 22nd, I read the words “Malcolm X shot dead at Harlem rally”. I can still recall that moment.

• I have imposed a 25% tariff on all American goods entering my home – Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Wrangler etc (Canada, Mexico and EU criticise Trump’s metal tariffs amid fears of trade war, 11 February). Everything collected will be sent to Medical Aid for Palestinians (Trump says Palestinians will have no right of return to Gaza under his plan, 10 February).

• Re readers’ letters about school reports (Letters, 13 February), I remember being told we were the worst first, second, third, fourth and fifth form that my school had ever experienced. That motivated me.

• The most honest report I received stated: “Bob objects to being led and refuses to be driven, so he must find his own way.” I’m still looking for it.
