Makro stops selling foam containers in all branches nationwide

Makro Thailand announces the success of its “Say Hi to Bio, Say No to Foam” project. It entirely ceases selling single-use foam containers at all its branches. Consistent with the Governments ‘going green’ initiatives. The move encourages use of green products in the food service sector and moves Makro closer to its goal of becoming a green products hub.

As part of our Earth Day celebrations on 22 April 2022, Makro’s ‘Say Hi to Bio, Say No to Foam’ project, launched in 2018, has seen another significant progression with the ending of selling single-use foam containers at all branches nationwide,” explained Ms. Siriporn Dechsingha, Chief Corporate Communication Officer, Siam Makro Public Company Limited. “This reduces consumption of single-use foam containers by around 107 million pieces which is equivalent to saving 233,791 trees. Our primary aim is to help ease global warming and pollution concerns.”

Makro is collaborating with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and business partners in promoting use of biodegradable products among restaurant operators.

“The project’s roadmap focusing on stopping selling single-use foam containers in all branches nationwide aligns with the government’s environmentally friendly commitment,” the executive added. “Firstly, we stopped selling foam containers in branches in tourist spots followed by all branches.”

Makro Thailand has arranged a string of seminars and activities along with promotional campaigns to sell biodegradable containers at cost-effective prices. The moves aim to cultivate a ‘going green’ mindset among food entrepreneurs and all involved sectors. Positive feedback has been received from entrepreneurs, food sellers and the public as use of biodegradable products has risen 23%.

Makro and its business partners have developed biodegradable containers made from pulp-like bamboo, bagasse, eucalyptus and corn as alternative to foam.  Each is designed according to its specific use. Currently, the company offers over 530 ‘green’ products for consumers to select.

“It all shows the great importance food entrepreneurs and consumers are increasingly placing on environmental concerns as they continue to choose more and more biodegradable products.”

Going forward, Makro is looking to help make Thailand a major hub of eco-friendly products. The company is committed to “Net Zero” sustainable development with zero net carbon dioxide within 2030.
