'Makes no sense!' - Manchester United fans react to David de Gea captaincy reports

A number supporters are not convinced that David de Gea is the right option to succeed Harry Maguire as Manchester United captain next season.

Maguire, who started England's 1-0 defeat to Hungary on Saturday, experienced a massively underwhelming 2021/22 campaign, resulting in him being frequently criticised by fans and pundits alike. He looked a shadow of the player that played a key role in helping England reach the final of the European Championship last summer.

His performances lacked a sense of leadership, meaning a number of United supporters are keen to see him stripped of the captaincy ahead of next term. New United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking at his maiden press conference last month, admitted that there was no guarantee the centre-back would retain the armband.

Considering leadership issues have been a problem within the United squad in recent years, fans have found it difficult to specifically pinpoint who could replace him as skipper this summer. Goalkeeper De Gea has often been touted as a potential solution, as has Cristiano Ronaldo.

And according to reports, De Gea is the favourite to shoulder the responsibility as United captain next season. However, some United supporters are not convinced that he is the answer, with many of them not convinced that a goalkeeper should sport the armband.

Below, MEN Sport has taken a closer look to see what some supporters have had to say on social media.

As you can see from the messages displayed in the tweets above, a number of United supporters are not keen on the prospect of De Gea becoming the club's next captain, largely because they would prefer to see an outfield player sporting the armband. Furthermore, some supporters do not believe that the Spaniard could fit within Ten Hag's plans moving forward.

Although De Gea enjoyed a superb campaign this time around, producing a string of impressive performances between the sticks, concerns have been raised about his distribution. Ten Hag is renowned for playing a system that requires possession to build from the back and that is not the shot-stopper's strongest quality.
