'Makes all the difference' - Jurgen Klopp explains how change can help Liverpool against Man City

Jurgen Klopp believes the ability to make five substitutions in the Champions League "makes all the difference" as Liverpool continue to juggle competing on three fronts.

The Reds boss once again made use of the extra permitted replacements to provide fresh legs during the second half of Tuesday's 3-1 quarter-final first leg win at Benfica.

Klopp has made at least four substitutions in all bar one of nine Champions League games this season, and has done likewise in each domestic cup game in which the additional changes have also been allowed.

Clubs voted last week to allow five substitutions in the Premier League next season, a move of which Klopp has long been a vocal advocate. And with Liverpool in the midst of a busy and pivotal run of fixtures - Sunday's title showdown at Manchester City comes in between the two ties against Benfica, with the FA Cup semi-final against Pep Guardiola's side the following weekend - is grateful for the ability to greater manage minutes.

“It makes all the difference because hopefully at one point this discussion will stop about about having an advantage with changing five times," said Klopp. "It is a necessity.

"It is April and we have played around 49 club games plus the games the boys played for their countries, and all the decisions will be made from now on.

"The boys have to dig really deep and fight with all they have but the more often you have the chance to share this intensity the better it is for the players and the better it is for the game. So yes, we could do that (on Tuesday), but both teams could. All good."
